The Neighbourhood: The Beach Meaning
The Beach Lyrics
Tell me, what would you say?
If I told you that I hated you
Would you go away?
Now I need your help with everything that I do
I don't want to lie, I've been relying on you
Fallin' again, I need a...

#1 top rated interpretation:I'm probably late to this but here we go.
I personally identify with this song as to reminds me of my rocky relationship with my mom.
Now I believe that the singer (Jesse Rutherford) is venting his feelings through this song - the singers feels suicidal hence "I hope I don't murder me" because he fees lonely, he also feels guilty for burdening this one person (be it a friend, family member or lover) hence "I don't wanna lie, I'm relying on you" and "I hope I don't burden you".
The person he relies on sometimes snaps at him because of the burden he put on them "you can throw shade" - he feels as if he is drowning "swim with me, I think I can see the beach" i link that the beach represents the good things that are just simply out of reach.

#2 top rated interpretation:I think this song is about someone who’s struggling with their mental health a lot, and they have someone, a close friend or a significant other that tries to help them.
The problem is, his problems are big and the singer’s afraid to burden them (their significant other) and to make his problems theirs (hence the lyric “i hope i don’t burden you”).
When he sings about swimming in the open i think what he means is that he’s afraid that this person will eventually get overwhelmed by his problems and leave because they have a life (we’re out in the open) and can’t handle his problems for
Too long.
When he sings “you made me feel little how you’re looking at me” it could mean that the singer thinks the other person feels pity for them.
And the part about throwing shade honestly im not sure but could mean that sometimes the person loses their patience with him cause of the way he acts, and that even though he’s ill he still does things to upset the person. Hence why he feels like he burdens them and why he’s afraid they’ll leave; and they can’t have that because “he’s been relying on them” and “he needs a pick-me-up” bc “he’s falling”
This is really messy and im probably wrong and im sure no one’s gonna read it but whatever lol -

#3 top rated interpretation:I think this song is about the singers battles with love and depression and how the two feelings are causing him to feel that his s/o is being burdened whilst he's being destroyed. He's dependant on this person therefore if they leave his feelings of depression will out-weigh the love.
idk what i just write -
My interpretation is that this guy is inlove with this girl ( and the girl is inlove too but they dont want to admit it) because they have been friends for so long or they promise to fall for each other.
That's the reason he says if I told you that "I love you tell me what would you say "? but he's so in love that he hates to admit it, so he says " if I told you that I hated you, would you go away".
"Fallin' again
I need a pick-me-up
I've been callin' you "friend,"
I might need to give it up"
(This part is self-explanatory)
and this part " If I meet you in the middle, maybe we could agree" He wants to talk about it to see if they could have something .
LASTLY when he says just swim with me he's basically asking her to let it flow to following him that they're so close to be something. But he doesn't want her to lose focus because she might realize what's happening and she might pull back.
It's Just two souls that are the same, falling in love for each other. But they act like they don't have feelings for each other even if they're dying for the other person to know. -
This song resonates with me very much. I’m in a similar situation at the moment, and this is also my first written interpretation so it may include some major plot holes and grammar errors. Despite that I hope you enjoy, buckle up and enjoy the read (:
- When I listen to this song it sounds like the person singing is struggling with their mental health. Telling us that he knows he’s sick and he’s tired of feeling this way.
“I’m sick and I’m tired too”
- His mental state is causing him to rely on his best friend who is also struggling for support.
“Now I need your help with everything I do. I don’t wanna lie, I’ve been relying on you”
- After some time the singer starts developing feelings for them.
“If I told you that I loved you, tell me, what would you say?”
- But he is afraid of ruining everything because of the mental state he “falls” into time and time again. Admitting that he may need his best friend to pick up the pieces after his mental health got worse again.
“Falling again I need a pick-me-up”
- I believe here that he is talking about the really bad moments, where the singer loses himself. and is asking them whether they are going to go away or stay with him during those moments.
“If I told you that I hated you, would you go away?”
- He also mentions that he feels his mental health is “burning” him and his best friend, meaning that it’s affecting both of them.
“ I feel it burning me, I feel it burning you”
- In this next part the singer hopes his mental health doesn’t drive him over the edge and he is afraid of burdening his best friend because he’s relying on them too much. I believe the singer is also worried about potentially making his friends mental health worse aswell and “burdening them”
“I hope I don’t murder me, I hope I don’t burden you”
- In the last part of the song the singer asks If his best friend will “swim with him” and that he thinks he can see the “beach”
- I believe swimming together is referring to him and his best friend working though their issues and working things out together, and the beach referring to the their life together after he has made it out of this bad mental health state and they both have grown together.
“Swim with me, I think I could see the beach”
-He sings that he needs his best friend even though they’re out in the “open” which is the vulnerable state that you have to be in just before getting better mentally.
“I need you with me, but we’re out in the open”
- He then tells them not to look underneath the water which represents the fear of the “unknown” that lies in taking the leap towards improvement.
“Just don’t look underneath us” -
This interpretation has been marked as poor. view anyway

This song is about closeted homosexuality towards a best friend and the fear that admitting to these feelings would ruin their current lives.
-
I believe the beach is about a dude having the time of his life chilling on the beach. As mentioned in the song "the beach" this signifies that he is at the beach proving my point that he is at the beach. Lastly he says "swim with me
meaning he wants friends to swim with him becase he is lonely.Thank you for listening to my interpretation of the wonderful song "the beach" by the neighborhood.

I think the starting of the song is about the singer feeling unsure about his feelings towards someone and he's sick and tired of not knowing and he feels like his feelings towards this someone will burden them and make them go away and I guess in the end he told this certain someone and this certain someone didn't how to feel and it caused an argument and now the singer feels unwanted little and he went to the beach because its his sentimental or vulnerable place idk and I guess he wanna drown irdk
this is prob so off and so dumb
-
I think the song is about a kind of relationship. Like a bad one. He’s sick of it and the problems and secrets. Then “the beach” is probably referred as the time when he couldn’t handle it anymore, their relationship.
-
I honestly thought it is about beach, duh...
It gave me vibes like Californication from RHCP, because I used to live in the warm country like CA and I miss it so bad noe -
i think its about love. they want to just be the 2 of them. the singer or writer and a lover. theyre saying to not look underneath because things always go wrong when other things are involved and other influences. they really want this person but they know that something will always get in the way if it isnt just the 2 of them
-
sounds like the singer is really relying on someone else to help them through something, and doesn't want to burden them with their worries. it could really be about anyone, we don't know because they don't say, but the message is pretty clear. they are relying on someone and don't want to burden them with all of their problems.
-
To me, the song feels like it’s about someone struggling with depression and being so co-dependent on a important person in their life. He hopes he doesn’t destroy himself and burden the person with all of his issues.
-
i think it’s about the narrator’s struggles with mental health and suicidal thought whilst relying on a friend, lover or even family for support. Almost like it’s a suicidal letter to the person who stayed by him during his battles with his mental health.
-
This song is about being in love with someone toxic. you want to tell them you love them but cant because you dont think theyll care. they throw shade (hurt you) and it doesent bother you because you love them. you know they are toxic but you see how much you rely on them. you hope they dont murder you because the relationship is clearly hurting you but you rely and love them too much to end it. you need them but cant be together out in the open because you know nobody will approve..
-
I personally identify with this song soooo soo much. I think its about falling in love with your best friend and it not being good for you because you don't know where you stand with each other, where you're going. The feelings just continue to eat you up inside. But they don't want to put the burden of their love on the other person.
-
I guess this song is about a suicide thought. He says he´s just sick and I guess that´s because he doesn´t know what to do. He´s just hurt and got no one. I guess he kinda describes his way of leaving earth, when he says "falling" or "swimming" because in the end he´s dead
