It's about how through the year, some things won't change.
Specifically they talk about people are always are obsessed with power, land and personal gain
"The end is knocking" - basically means people are following these things for all the reasons and it will result into the world ending.

The second verse is about the people, and how no matter how hard they try to change things, it won't happen, because world leader will only shoot them down
"Full of ourselves, tied to our fate."
this means that all the people our full of ideas to create a better future, but they're tied to the government ideas and their fate is already decided for them

"As you close your eyes tonight and pray for a better life
you'll see them flying helplessly away"
    Another example of their future.
Saying that all hope is lost.
