Taylor Swift: Never Grow Up Meaning

Album cover for Never Grow Up album cover

Song Released: 2010

Never Grow Up Lyrics

Your little hand's wrapped around my finger and it's so quiet in the world tonight.
Your little eyelids flutter 'cause you're dreamin' so I tuck you in, turn on your favorite night light.
To you, everything's funny. You got nothing to regret....

Taylor moved out in July. She's singing about how she misses her parents and how she doesn't want to grow up. How perfect her childhood was, with no worries.

It's easy to understand the meaning of this song, just by listening to its lyrics. Hearing this song for the first time i cried.

It's about, when your young, you've made no mistakes and life is simple. But you still want to grow up. By the done you've grown up you have many regrets and have been scarred, and everything you thought you had was one day gonna be gone.

In eighth grade we had a local mom visit our classroom with her baby as part of a program to teach us about empathy. During the last visit, we watched a slide show presentation showing pictures of the baby at different stages from six months to about fourteen months. They put the photos with this song as the background music and I was almost crying in front of my classmates. I realized that this baby girl was like the child at the beginning of "Never Grow Up". She was innocent and all she wanted to do was laugh and sleep and tool over. She was carefree, unlike me and the rest of my class.

Whether you accept it or not but childhood was the best time of your life. When reaching the corner of the street first was the most important race and finishing your homework on time so you can watch you favorite shows. It was a time when you believed that people will always be there for you, no one will hurt you or ignore you . When you woke up with sunlight shining upon you and your mothers sweet voice and not with regrets and mistakes. What changes is that after wishing all the time to grow up you finally grow up and realize nothing is the same like it was. People leave you alone, they even hurt you and no matter how many people are around you you still feel lonely because you have learnt that nothing lasts forever. The song reminds us that no matter what we are going through in life we should think of the little things from our childhood how we used to dance carefree and how we waited for our dad to return home and those songs that we sang and all those words that you believed in and all those memories you made with all the people. And no matter where you go and whoever you meet nothing will ever be the same.
PS. This is one of the most beautiful songs i have ever heard which makes me tear up and lyrics like (No one will desert you)or (And no one's ever burned you Nothing's ever left you scarred) hurt a lot.

This song is so heart-breaking. I am missing my childhood so bad. For all young children out there. . . Don't rush to grow up, enjoy life, cherish every moment you have with your parents. Because when you get older life is also getting harder. You will make hard decisions, unlike when you're a kid all you have to do is. . play, eat and watch your favorite cartoons. Live, Laugh and Love. Enjoy your childhood, kids, make lots of good memories so that when you grow up, you will reminisce those memories. Enjoy Life! =))

I think this song is about taylor when she had no regrets and was around 14 wanting to grow up. The song says "At 14 there's just so much you can't do and you can't wait to move out someday and call your own shots" and when she finally did grow up and her life was full of regrets, scared, and didn't know what to do, she wanted to be a child again. I think this song goes out to all the kids in the world telling them You want to grow up but it's not what you think it is and that they need to enjoy the ride of a kid until they are grown up.

i just heard this song for the first time today and i cried i have felt this way for a really long time and im afraid its not going to get better im only 15 and it cant get better cuz soon imma be on my own so i have been wishing so badly to be a child again cuz if bein 15 is this hard its only getting harder cuz when i was little i wasnt depressed wanna kill myself feel like i ruined my family. my brother didnt make me feel horrible when i was 5 and everything was simple there wasnt bad in the world only good. suicide didnt exist 10 years ago and it was the furthest thing from my mind. i would have never thought my mom would slap me. so i pray that ill wake up one day and ill be 5 years old again and ill never grow up. and knowing im still so young scares me cuz how will i feel when im 20 out on my own it couldnt possibly be better and listening to this song and hear someone singing about something im feeling just somehow made me feel better knowing im not the only one im not alone feeling this and not wanting to grow up wishing to be a little innocent kid again where everything is good is what this song is about and i love it

Well, I am very sorry for you that things are going this way. But for me they have been about the opposite way around. This is the least depressed I have been in years. God bless.

I can totally relate to this song I'm 11 and wanted to grow up so badly, I wanted to do social networking have a cell phone etc, until I heard this song. For any young person reading this, stop trying to grow up and enjoy the ride. Also read the book "Finally".

The songs meaning is to make us realize not to take things for granted as a teenager or a younger child because eventually all of those small things that maybe once embarrassed us or annoyed us will make the biggest difference in are life when we grow up and those things are know longer there. The songs also telling us to embrace being a child and cherish every moment and sound you hear because when you grow up these will be you're fondest memories.

She had a happy childhood, and couldn't bear to see that end..seriously,some of us DON'T have a happy childhood, and moving out and callin' the shots is great. But for those with happy childhood days,it's something else.

I think it's talking about how she was still innocent and carefree. And how everything was so simple when she was little and had people taking care of her. And when she got older, she got mortified of her parents embarassing her and she talks about how she wishes she would have appreciated that more. I also think that it references to how people in her life said she'd never get hurt and never be scarred but she had to grow up sometime and realize that she's not innocent anymore.

I agree with you all, it's heartwarming and it brought me to tears to.

I do wonder who she wrote it for. at first I tought for someone she knows, like a cousin or something like that. But then I thought, What if the song is about herself? what if the first part is her mom or dad telling her that stuf, and the last part she realizing that her parentes were right?

if you agree with me (or not), please let me know by subscribing.

P.S. I'm sorry when my english is full of mistakes, I'm dutch and 14 so I don't really know how to spell the words.

I love this song. I am 15 and i think about all of my childhood memories. But i really think about my little sister more than me. She is 3 and she doesnt have a care in the world. I dred the day when i see her all grown up. I dont want her to grow up. Everyone knows the best days of your life was when you were a little kid.

This song is a lesson. Taylor Swift wants to tell her little fans don't grow up so fast because one day they'll realize that childhood memories are always the best.
